About
Alison is an experienced neuro physiotherapist with over 30 years working in neurological physiotherapy. She is an Advanced Bobath trained therapist and uses combined treatment approaches incorporating Myofascial Release, Bobath and neurological researched based principals; she is an LSVT BIG Clinician and BIG for Life Certified Clinician, PWR!(Parkinson Wellness Recovery) Therapist and PWR! Instructor, as well as a Rock Steady Certified Coach.
Alison has experience with the Atypical Parkinson’s presentations also, including Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD), Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) & Vascular Parkinsonism. She has achieved ‘Advanced’ level in the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release curriculum. She has an extensive resume in relation to management of the neurological client including GRASP; Carr & Shepherd’s Motor Relearning for stroke and is very involved with the research community both with reviewing and participating in neurological research. Alison is also certified to teach Nordic walking, an excellent tool to increase the intensity of walking, of particular importance in the management of the person with Parkinson’s.
Alison is also a Consultant (pro bono) to Boxing4Health and volunteers her time to coach and educate the trainers and works with the boxers. The class setting is an ideal environment for support and camaraderie for people with Parkinson’s. Consultation involves ensuring that the exercise classes follow the principles of Parkinson’s research for exercise on amplitude and intensity, pioneered by Dr. Becky Farley and her research.
Ali is also a consultant volunteering her time with the PWR! Retreat - a retreat and conference for people with Parkinson’s and their care partners. Alison also brought PWR! to Ottawa for the PWR! MOVES instructor course.
